Australia warns against Sea Travel in the Philippines

Australia’s government has warned people in Australia to only travel be sea in the Philippines if they can’t find any other mode of transport. They have stated that there are poor rescue services to help the ships if they get into trouble.

The warning comes after some warnings that a passenger ship had sank off the Philippines killing 9 people.
The ships that sank was a huge superferry carrying over 900 passengers most of who were rescued in the incident.

In the Philippines travelling by sea is very common and cheap, and is an easy way to visit the islands, as there are over 7000 of them! Due to costs the country cannot monitor all sea travel and therefore cannot respond quickly if there is an emergency. The boats are frequently overloaded and the seas can get very rough in that area. The services are poor compared to those in Austrailia.

The government has also warned Austrailians against pirate attacks which are also rife in the Phillippines
The Phillipines main coast guard has stated that austrailia was unfair and the seas are safe, he would however state that as they will lose much revenue that they can ill afford to lose.
